RMS Teacher of the Year: Catherine Phillips
Catherine Phillips

Catherine Phillips believes that education has the ability to change lives. That belief drives her in her approach to teaching and the students in her care.

“I wanted to be part of a team that inspires positive change in the lives of students and their families.”

Catherine is entering her third year as a 3rd grade at teacher Riverside Magnet School. Her colleagues have named her the school’s Teacher of the Year. She is one of a few candidates for LEARN Teacher of the Year, which will be announced at the RESC’s Convocation on Monday, Aug. 24.

Here’s some more about Catherine:

What is your favorite memory while teaching?

My favorite memory was the first time that I read the last few chapters of Because of Winn-Dixie with my class. The end of the book elicited an unexpected rollercoaster of emotions from the students. We all laughed and cried with the main character and we debated her motives and lessons learned. It was such a memorable moment because I knew the scholars had started to develop into a true community of readers!

What is a fun fact about you?

I’ve been skydiving… twice!

What is one of your hidden talents?

After some direct instruction from my students, I have recognized my ability to do The Floss dance.

How do you spend your summer vacation?

During summer vacation I enjoy reading at the beach, spending time with my family, and researching new ideas for the following school year!

What inspires you as a teacher?

I’m inspired by my students! They continuously inspire me with their ability to be resilient, accepting, and kind. My students remind me of why we are here.

I’m also inspired by my colleagues! I’m fortunate to work with a remarkable group of educators whose passion, dedication, and support inspires me to grow, change and learn alongside them.

If you could give your students any life advice, what would it be?

You are in charge of the direction your life takes and you are more powerful than you think! Regardless of the past, current challenges, or future barriers, believe in yourself and you can persevere, overcome, and achieve.
