LEARN Identifies New Director

LEARN Identifies a Director of Interdepartmental Programming

The way in which educators and students teach and learn is different today. As southeastern Connecticut’s Regional Educational Service Center, it is LEARN’s mission/vision to continually improve the quality of public education for all and strive to ensure every child has access to high quality public education and opportunities – especially amid a pandemic. To that end, LEARN identified the need for a Director of Interdepartmental Programming and tapped Andrea Simmons to be the first in that role.

Ms. Simmons is currently the principal of The Friendship School (TFS), LEARN’s early childhood magnet school serving pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students. In Andrea’s six years at TFS, she transitioned the school from a two-town partnership between New London and Waterford to a school accepting students from throughout the state of Connecticut. She led the school to a successful accreditation by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and helped thousands of young learners as they began their academic careers.

Emerging from the COVID-19 pandemic and looking at the future of education, LEARN realized our agency had to further regional, school-based programs for all children. In the role of Director of Interdepartmental Programming, Simmons will provide support to network teams, regional partners, school administrators, and specialists to help enhance post-pandemic school instruction. Andrea will remain at TFS until June 30th to assure a successful completion of this school year and a smooth transition to the school’s new principal.

Change can be hard.  We have learned, though, that our entire agency has a strength that lies in a common passion for children, young adults, and their education.  That strength ties us all together and will carry LEARN to a bright future - of that we are sure.
