Windy Petersen Named Assistant Principal at CTRA

LEARN and Goodwin University Announce Windy Petersen as Assistant Principal at Connecticut River Academy

LEARN, the Regional Educational Service Center for southeastern Connecticut, and Goodwin University have hired Windy Petersen as Assistant Principal of Connecticut River Academy at Goodwin University (CTRA). Petersen has served as the Interim Assistant Principal at the school since 2020.

CTRA is a partnership between LEARN and Goodwin University. The school is located on Goodwin University’s Riverside Campus. With a Sustainability Theme, school staff provides hands-on learning in Environmental Studies and Advanced Manufacturing. Students learn about environmental and social issues such as climate change and green energy in the school’s state-of-the-art laboratories and its own research vessel that brings science classes directly out on the Connecticut River. CTRA's Early College Model offers unique college and career experiences, including the opportunity to earn more than 35 tuition-free college credits.

LEARN and Goodwin University sought to hire an assistant principal to provide instructional leadership and assist in the development of curriculum and instructional programs; establish and maintain high expectations and standards for student learning and behavior; and to direct, supervise and evaluate professional, paraprofessional and support staff.

“Since I have had the privilege of serving as the Interim Assistant Principal, I have been provided the opportunity to work within the wonderfully diverse community, building rapport with the scholars, families, and growing the educators,” said Petersen. “My growth as an educational leader has been and continues to be an exciting journey. I have the ability to motivate, inspire and support educators which in turn has a greater impact on not only the students, but their families, the school communities and the greater community at large. I look forward to continuing to serve the CTRA, LEARN, and Goodwin communities.”

Prior to her current role as Interim Assistant Principal, Petersen, of Amston, served as Student Services Supervisor for LEARN Goodwin College Magnet Schools. Additionally, she has nearly 30 years of classroom experience, having taught at several schools in Connecticut and Washington. Petersen was Breakthrough Magnet School’s Teacher of the Year in 2016, and Horace W. Porter Teacher of the Year in 2003.

Petersen has a Bachelor of Science degree in Special Education/Elementary Education from St. Joseph College, a Master of Science degree in Remedial Reading from Central Connecticut State University, and a 6th Year degree in Education Leadership from Central Connecticut State University.

Petersen begins in her new position on July 1, 2021.
